The banner still says last spring’s field trip
Before
After
Students notice when a Classroom header or a first-day slide still says “Fall 2025” or last unit’s title across the hero. Redesigning every deck before term start is ideal; reality is a flattened PNG in Drive while the bell schedule is live. The job is to paint out the dated line, keep the mascot or subject icon, and letter this term in Google Slides — not to tour every cleanup tool, and not to lift another teacher’s branded banner wholesale.
Paint the term; keep the mascot
Upload the flattened PNG to text removal. Brush the school-year label, an outdated learning objective burned into the art, and a guest-speaker nameplate as one block. Zoom to 100% on illustrated linework. You want the original grain, not a soft rectangle. Do not run full-image auto if the school name is drawn into the crest; paint only the dated line. A free-template badge in the corner is a mark after the letters are gone. Mixing logo and date in the same stroke is why a mascot still shows a yellow smear. If auto ate a letter of the crest, you need the Canva or Slides layers, not a second pass.
Files you can actually process
Export the slide as PNG or JPEG first; do not upload a .pptx. Uploads here accept JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF up to 10MB and 6000×6000 px. A 1920 px PNG under 4MB typically returns in under 60 seconds. Classroom headers are wide; Slides are often 16:9. Export each crop from an untitled base rather than stretching one file. Do not upload a 400 px screenshot of the projector. Name files `period-3-bio-base.png` versus `period-3-bio-fall26.png` so next term is a lettering job.
Letter in Slides, not in the JPEG
Dates, unit titles, and “HW DUE FRIDAY” belong in a text box you can change during prep. Baking them into the hero is why you are here again in January. Skip the tool when the type covers most of a face, when the file is a photo of a whiteboard, or when the template forbids modification. Clearing your own outdated unit stamp is prep. Lifting another teacher’s mascot pack is not. District logos you are not licensed to alter should stay; paint around them.
Parent newsletter is a third crop
The same untitled base can feed Classroom, the first-day slide, and a newsletter header if you letter each surface separately. Do not reconstruct a snow-day cancellation onto the evergreen hero. A second auto pass will not invent linework. Relink the Canva file when the date sat on a cheek of the mascot.
Term-start habit
One afternoon: clear last term’s type on the two or three heroes you actually reuse, export untitled bases, then letter in Slides. Do not batch the entire 80-slide deck through reconstruction. When the first-week banner still shows last spring’s field-trip date, clear the overlay and publish materials that match the lesson you are about to teach.
Chromebook crops punish tiny type
A date that reads on your 27-inch monitor becomes a smear on a student Chromebook. Paint the old term at 100% zoom on the master, then letter this term in Slides at a size that still reads after Classroom downsamples the header. Do not reconstruct a QR code that pointed at last year’s Bitmoji classroom. Put the new link in the assignment description. Whiteboard photos of last week’s agenda are a reshoot, not a cleanup job.
District templates and student work
If the PNG is a district template, read the license before you erase a crest. If the hero includes a student’s face, you need the same media release you would need for a yearbook. Clearing your own unit title is prep. Publishing a student’s still without a release is not. When the first-week banner still shows last spring’s field-trip date, clear the overlay and publish materials that match the lesson you are about to teach.
Sub plans and shared drives
If a substitute will open the same header, letter the week in a text box they can edit. A reconstructed date they cannot change is how Friday’s quiz still says Wednesday. Keep untitled bases in a shared Drive folder named by course, not by month. When the bell is about to ring and the header still names last year, clear the type and leave the crest alone.
Newsletter versus Classroom
A parent newsletter header can reuse the untitled mascot if you letter the month in the email tool. Do not reconstruct “OCTOBER FESTIVAL” into the Classroom banner or you will fight it in November. Skip photos of other classrooms. Skip stock “diverse students” packs you do not have a license to modify. Prep period is short: two heroes, one pass each, then letter in Slides.
When the bell is about to ring and the header still names last year, clear the type and leave the crest alone.
