Four watermark types this tool is built for

Most “remove watermark” pages treat every overlay as the same blob. In practice you are fighting four different marks, and mixing them up wastes credits. (1) A corner or edge logo — a brand badge, stock-site icon, or contractor preview stamp sitting on a relatively flat region. (2) A repeating / tiled pattern — the same word or logo stamped across the whole frame, often at 15–40% opacity. (3) A semi-transparent wash — a large logo or diagonal copyright line that tints hair, sky, or product texture underneath. (4) Burned-in lettering that looks like a watermark but is actually type (a date, SKU, or “PROOF” line). Auto watermark removal is for (1)–(3). Typed labels belong on text removal; emoji stickers belong on emoji removal. Using the wrong tool is the most common reason a pass looks smeared.

Backgroundcanvas runs in the browser. Upload a JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF up to 10MB, with a long-edge cap of 6000×6000 pixels. A typical 2000–3500 px JPEG under 4MB returns in under 60 seconds on a normal connection; that is a product constraint, not a lab benchmark against Photoshop. After the job finishes, drag the compare slider at 100% zoom on the mark and on a clean area next to it. If the reconstruction is softer than the original grain, run a manual brush on just the leftover, rather than re-running auto on the whole photo.

Start here when the mark is a single badge: a stock-site bug, a studio watermark in the lower-right, or a manufacturer overlay on packaging photography you own. Auto mode is usually enough if the badge sits on sky, a table, or a wall. It fails more often when the logo crosses a face, a product edge, or small type you intend to keep. In that case switch to Manual, paint only the badge, and leave the subject unpainted. Zoom the slider across the former logo at 100%. You want matching grain, not a plastic patch. If a faint rectangle remains, one extra brush pass on that rectangle is cheaper than a second full-image auto run.

Do not treat a stock watermark as a license. Clearing a Getty, Shutterstock, or similar mark does not grant you commercial rights to the photo. Use this path for images you shot, commissioned, or were hired to retouch — for example a contractor left a “preview” stamp on a deliverable you already paid for. Keep the original file. If legal ownership is unclear, stop and get a clean export from the author instead of reconstructing pixels.

Repeating and tiled watermarks

Tiled marks are the hardest auto case because every repeat sits on a different texture. Upload the highest-resolution master you have (stay under 10MB; if the file is larger, export a quality JPEG rather than crushing a PNG). Use Auto first so the model sees the repeating pattern. Then inspect a 3×3 grid of the frame: corners, center, and mid-edges. Leftover tiles usually remain over high-frequency detail (hair, fabric weave, foliage). Paint those leftovers in Manual. Skip the tool when the tile covers more than about a third of a face or a product silhouette — reconstruction will invent skin or packaging. Those frames need a layered source or a reshoot.

Semi-transparent overlays

A large ghosted logo across a portrait or poster tints the pixels underneath rather than covering them with opaque ink. Auto removal tries to recover the underlying texture. Check hue, not just the shape of the logo: if a grey wash still sits on a blue sky or on skin, the job is incomplete. Manual brush on the remaining tint, then compare again. Heavy JPEG blocking under a transparent mark will not fully restore; you will see a soft smudge. Reduce the upload size only if you exceeded 10MB — do not downscale a 4000 px original to 800 px hoping it “processes faster.” You lose the only detail the model can copy from.

When the “watermark” is actually text

Dates, prices, “SALE,” and schedule grids are lettering. The watermark model is trained on logos and overlays; running it on a paragraph of type often leaves glyph ghosts. Switch to text removal for those jobs, or enable text removal on the process page when the overlay is words only. Keep watermark removal for logo-shaped or patterned marks. If both exist (a brand badge plus a date), do watermark first, download, then run text removal on the date so each model sees a simpler problem.

Limits, timing, and a 100% quality check

Hard limits you can reproduce today: 10MB per file; 6000×6000 px maximum; JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF only. There is no desktop install. Sign-in credits apply after the free trial path; failed tasks are not supposed to keep the deduction. A 2400 px JPEG of a poster with a corner logo typically finishes in under a minute; a 5500 px tiled overlay can take longer and is more likely to need a manual pass. We do not publish a fake “99% success rate.” Success for us means: the compare slider at 100% shows no readable mark, and the surrounding grain still matches.

Quality checklist before you download: (1) zoom the former mark; (2) zoom a nearby clean area and compare sharpness; (3) look at edges of hair, type you want to keep, and product seams; (4) confirm you had the right to edit the photo. Then download HD. If you need a wider canvas after the mark is gone, finish watermark removal first and only then use AI outpainting — expanding a still-watermarked frame just copies the overlay into the new pixels.

When to stop and use a layered file instead

Stop and request a PSD/AI/source export when: the mark covers most of a face; the file is a screenshot of a screenshot with heavy blocking; you do not own the image; or the only copy is smaller than the size you must print (for example an A2 lobby poster at 300 dpi needs roughly 4960×7016 px — above our 6000 px long-edge cap, so a 6000 px clean master can feed a print shop upscale, but a 1200 px web JPEG cannot). Reconstruction copies nearby pixels. It cannot invent a missing eye or a sharp type lockup that was never in the file.

How long does watermark removal take?

A typical photo under 4MB and about 2000–3500 pixels on the long edge usually finishes in under 60 seconds. Larger tiled overlays and files near the 10MB or 6000 px cap can take longer and often need a manual brush pass on leftovers.

What if the watermark repeats across the whole image?

Use Auto first so the model can see the repeating pattern, then inspect corners and the center at 100% zoom. Paint leftover tiles with the manual brush. If the pattern covers a large part of a face or product, you need a layered source file — not another auto pass.

Will you store my photos?

Uploads are processed to run the job. See the Privacy Policy for retention and third-party processors. Do not upload images that contain other people’s personal data unless you have a right to process them.
