Bookers skim the PDF in seconds

The electronic press kit is three stills and a one-sheet. A green room of cases, a last-tour date across the kick drum, or a borrowed-camera watermark loses the skim. A studio session is ideal; most acts shoot between load-ins. The job is to isolate the lineup (or the solo face) off the clutter — not to paste the band onto a stadium they have not played, and not to tour every cleanup tool. Cut the people; leave the room you can stand in

Face a window or a soft stage wash. Leave headroom for a square social crop and a wide one-sheet header. Upload the sharpest frame with readable faces. Run background removal. Inspect hair, instruments, and jacket edges at 100%. Swap to charcoal, off-white, or a muted brand color. Do not invent a festival night. Do not clone a fifth member. If “SUMMER 2025” is burned on the bass, that is a text pass after isolation. A photographer mark you are licensed to clear is a watermark after the cutout.

Files for PDF versus social

Uploads accept JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF up to 10MB and 6000×6000 px. A 2400 px JPEG under 4MB typically returns in under 60 seconds. Export an 1800 px-wide JPEG for the PDF so the file does not balloon, and a 1080 px square for Instagram from the same still. Skip 0.5x ultrawide that bends the drum hardware. Skip a 400 px Story screenshot. Name files `epk-hero-clean.jpg` versus `epk-greenroom-as-shot.jpg` so a magazine can ask for the original.

Live stills versus posed stills

A live frame with a real crowd is a different honesty problem: do not clone extra fans. Isolate only if cables and a beer tray steal the faces, and keep a slice of the actual room. A posed alley still can take a calmer field if that alley is where you shot. Do not swap in an arena. Promoters who billed a 200-cap room will notice a CGI bowl.

Rights

Only edit photos you own, commissioned, or licensed for the kit. Cleaning your Camera Roll is promo. Lifting another band’s EPK is not. If a venue forbids photos, isolation does not create a release. Guest musicians need the same permission as a client at a salon.

When the one-sheet is due Friday

Pick three faces that already work. Process them with one field so the PDF looks like one act. Overnight retouching of the whole dump is a different invoice. A second auto pass will not invent a sharp jawline on a 1/30s toast photo. When the booking email is ready and the hero still shows last year’s festival banner, isolate the lineup, keep the room honest, and send a kit that matches the load-in.

Tour stamps belong in the one-sheet type

Dates and “SUPPORTING…” lines go in the layout, not in reconstructed enamel on a Les Paul. Baking them into the JPEG is why you are here every routing change. When the routing changes and the JPEG still names last summer, clear the overlay on a separate text pass if needed — this article stays on the cutout — and keep a blank master.

Colorist versus isolation

A grade that matches the one-sheet is fine after download. Isolation will not fix mixed tungsten and LED on the same face. Reshoot under one light if the bassist is orange and the singer is blue. Do not reconstruct a missing instrument. If a member left, shoot a new lineup; cloning a hole in the row is a different ethics problem than a calm field.

Magazines still ask for original

Solo act versus five-piece

A solo still can take a tighter crop. A five-piece needs every face readable after isolation; if someone is behind a cymbal, pick another frame. Do not reconstruct a hidden face. Support-slot stills

If you opened for someone else, do not crop their banner out and imply a headline you did not have. Isolation of cables is fine. Erasing the headliner’s type is a different job and a different honesty problem. Keep the as-shot if the billing is the point of the still.
